(FREELANCE WEB DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT)

Websites designed properly, then built properly.

I’m a freelance web designer and developer based in Manchester, working with businesses and agencies on custom websites that need more than an off-the-shelf template. I handle both the UI/UX design and front-end development, so the original idea carries through into the finished site.

Most custom website projects are built with Next.js, with a CMS such as Payload where it makes sense. That gives you a fast, modern website with clean development underneath and an editing experience that does not require touching code.

I can work on the full process from initial structure and website design through to development and launch, or slot into an existing project where you already have branding, content or designs ready to go.

Questions about custom websites

A custom website from me typically costs £3k–£7k (+VAT), priced as a fixed quote once we've agreed the scope. The main things that move the price are the number of page templates, how much content the CMS needs to manage, and how much animation and interaction is involved. Send a rough brief through the contact form and I'll come back with a few questions and a rough idea of cost.

A custom website usually takes 3 - 6 weeks from the first call to launch, depending mainly on the number of page templates and how quickly content and feedback come back. The timeline is agreed in the plan before work starts, and covers design in Figma, the Next.js build, testing on real devices and launch.

A bespoke website is designed and built from scratch around your content and goals, rather than adapted from a theme made for everyone. It costs more than a template upfront, and suits businesses whose content, brand or interactions don't fit a ready-made theme. I'm a Manchester-based web designer and developer: I design the layouts, typography and interactions in Figma, then build them in Next.js, with no leftover template code to work around. The homepage of this site scores 100 for Lighthouse performance on desktop and ships under 180KB of compressed JavaScript.

I set up a CMS such as Payload around your content, so pages, text and images are edited in forms rather than code. On this site, pages are built from sections that keep their content apart from their layout, and a new case study starts as a draft with a live preview before it goes out, with no developer or code deploy needed.

Next.js suits a fully bespoke site, Webflow suits a team that wants to manage its site in a visual builder, and WordPress makes sense when a site depends on a particular plugin. I usually build custom websites in Next.js with Payload CMS, so there's no theme or plugin stack to work around. If your team would rather work visually, I also design and build Webflow websites.

Ongoing support from me is a monthly block of time for updates, new pages and improvements, priced £35 / hour to fit how much you need with a minimum of 5 hours per month. Day-to-day content edits happen in the CMS, so support time goes on the jobs that genuinely need a developer.

Yes. The sites I build launch with the technical SEO in place: page titles and descriptions, structured data and an XML sitemap, as on this site. Getting indexed is the easy part; ranking for competitive searches takes useful content and links built up over time.
