Flexible Shopify theme development with reusable sections your team can manage through the theme editor.

03App integrations

Subscriptions, reviews, email marketing, payments and other Shopify apps integrated cleanly into the store.

04Migrations & rebuilds

Products, customers, redirects and content moved from Shopify or another ecommerce platform without unnecessary disruption.

(FREELANCE SHOPIFY DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT)

Custom Shopify stores without the template feel.

I work as a freelance Shopify designer and developer, helping ecommerce brands create stores that feel specific to them rather than another variation of the same theme. That can mean a completely new Shopify design and build, a custom theme, or improving an existing store that has outgrown its current setup.

My Shopify development work covers custom Liquid theme development, reusable sections, product and collection templates, app integrations, subscriptions, migrations and responsive ecommerce design. I also pay close attention to performance, conversion journeys and technical SEO while building.

Based in Manchester, I work directly with brands as well as agencies looking for freelance Shopify development support. Projects can cover the full design and build or development from an existing Figma design.

(Questions)

Shopify questions, answered.

A custom Shopify store from me typically costs £5k–£8k (+VAT), priced as a fixed quote once the scope is agreed. The main cost drivers are whether the store needs a fully custom theme or custom sections on an existing theme such as Dawn, the size of the catalogue, subscriptions, app integrations and any migration from another platform. Shopify bills its plan and app fees to the store owner separately.

Shopify charges a monthly plan fee, card processing fees on every sale, and a subscription for each paid app you add. Current UK prices are on Shopify's pricing page; the bigger plans charge lower card rates, and using a payment provider other than Shopify Payments adds a Shopify transaction fee on top. Most small stores don't need Shopify Plus, which is aimed at high-volume brands. Apps are the cost people forget: WellPaws, for example, runs its subscriptions through Loop.

Shopify is the better choice for most small UK brands, because hosting, security, checkout and platform updates are handled for you. WooCommerce is a free WordPress plugin, so you look after hosting, updates and plugin compatibility yourself, or pay someone to. It can make sense if your business already runs on WordPress and wants to keep everything there. Otherwise, Shopify lets your team spend its time on products and customers rather than servers.

Both: fully custom Shopify themes, or custom sections built on an existing theme such as Dawn, depending on what the store needs. ShopM2M, the online shop for M2M Menswear in Southport, runs on a custom theme rather than one from the theme store, with brand-first navigation and filters for price, size, colour, category and brand. WellPaws sits on Dawn, Shopify's own base theme, with custom sections, product templates and subscription journeys on top.

A new Shopify store usually takes 4 - 6 weeks from the first call to launch, and the timeline is agreed in the plan before work starts. It depends mostly on how many templates the design needs, how big the catalogue is, and whether products and customers are coming across from another platform. ShopM2M, with 1,422 products and 16.5k colour and size variants, needed a size filter that runs from S to XXXL through collar sizes to trouser waists.

Yes. Sections are added, reordered and edited in Shopify's theme editor without a developer, while products, collections, discounts and orders stay in the normal Shopify admin. I build sections so your team can rearrange them without breaking anything: on ShopM2M, each campaign hero slide takes its own phone image alongside the desktop one, so a sale never turns up on a phone as a squashed banner.
